There have been several
restaurants closing in the last several months, but two new operations just
opened: Dish and 41 South. Not bad. Look for the articles I will be writing
for Idaho Cuisine in the next issue. FYI, I just started writing features
for the magazine. You can tell I like 'em. Their link is at the top of the
page.
We
are pretty sure this is the most complete dining guide for North Idaho
restaurants north of CdA. Restaurants in Sandpoint and North Idaho run the
gamut of culinary types, and most people can find something that fits their
palates. We have a culinary program, a world-class ski resort, and every
type of cuisine from Sushi to Italian, Philly Cheese Steaks to good old
fashioned hamburgers. A couple of the eateries listed below are presently
closed, either for seasonal reasons, or because they are up for sale. Still,
we try to keep this list current, and if they are for sale, we expect (uh,
hope) these will be open again soon.
The numbered ratings come from a
reader's poll in Yahoo Travel. My ratings come from my personal experience.
What qualifies me to make such judgments? I worked with Emeril Legasse
for several years, was main dining room Captain at the #1 ranked restaurant
in the nation - Commander's Palace in New Orleans, taught at a culinary
school, and host the show Gourmet to Go and North Idaho Arts and Adventure
on KSPT and KBFI. Many of the chefs and owners of these restaurants have
been on one of the shows. In general, I think we have a pretty good dining
environment, including grocery stores. Keep in mind that I visit all
restaurants, but only over a year period or so for some, and more often for
others. Menus change, owners change, management changes, servers, cooks, and
chefs change. Hopefully we get it right, but if you had a different
experience. please let us know so we can update our page. So, bon appetit!

Arlo’s Ristorante
(Italian) Rated #2
for all Sandpoint Restaurants by Yahoo Travel. Arlo’s is the sweet child of
Tom and Lisa Guscott
with Lisa's family's recipes from her childhood in New York City. Fabulous
entrees, dazzling appetizers and wonderful homemade desserts are favorites
of locals and visitors. Nice out door deck, and some good Italian wines.
They had a recent fire and have made repairs, and are now open again. Food
better than ever. Loved the Amarone we had last time there. Perhaps the most
consistent restaurant in Sandpoint. Love listening to Neighbor John play the
blues, who is, perhaps the best musician in Sandpoint. Can't imagine this
town without this place. 330 North First Ave.

BAB'S PIZZERIA
bab, originally from
New York, started her first pizza kiosk in the little group of buildings
that once housed the eateries on Oak Street in what was Lil' Bear's Pizza
place. People loved her pizza, and now the new location offers convenient
parking some of the
best hand-made New York style pizza in all of Sandpoint. A great thin crust
– try the veggie combo pizza with marinara sauce – with tons of toppings.
Bab’s is a local favourite so you know it’s got to be good. Bab’s also
serves sandwiches, salads, soups plus daily pasta specials. As always,
students get free soda with a slice!

before they are too slammed.

Restaurant(American Breakfast) In Ivano's old location, Blue Moon
started with breakfast, now serves lunch, and dinner occasionally or is not
far off the horizon. They spent a bundle in time and effort fixing up the
old building, and though they have taken their time moving from breakfast to
lunch and now to dinner, when they do something, they seem to do it well.
I've eaten lunch there several times, and it is always good. While it isn't
something that makes me want to yell their praises from the mountain tops,
it is always satisfying, and portions are good. 124 South 2nd Avenue

Trinity AT THE BEACH(Eclectic Southern & New Orleans Cuisine)
* Just moved to taking over the Beach House as their new
location Okay, loved it when Chef Gabe used to be
there. Now, the food is good enough, but the views are still the best in
Sandpoint. Good cocktails, and a definite improvement since they now have a full
liquor license. As of summer of 2009 they are still working it out, and have not
yet achieved the measure of great food and service they had at their former
location. In fact, it feels much like the last two renditions of the Beach
House. Anyway, still among my favorite places to dine and just hang out.

Chimney Rock Grill(American) In the Selkirk Lodge at Schweitzer, the
Chimney Rock Grill offers family dining with breathtaking mountain and

of Northwest Wines. However, do not expect regional cuisine, in spite of the
name. One summer the closest they came to serving a northwestern dish was
Jamaican Jerk Chicken. Still, good food in a cool place.

One of the venerable old Sandpoint standbys, Connie’s has daily lunch and

have a full service lounge with a comfortable atmosphere. Had the previous new owners
on my radio show a few months ago. See, Connie's had closed, and a couple of
the girls who ran the place on the floor took over as the new owners. They
in turn also went under, and the former owner of the Beach House now runs

One of Sandpoint's newest destinations, the packed room shows that owners
Gary & Laura Peitz had the right idea to give Sandpoint "Affordable Gourmet
Dining" with a wine list and menu that doesn't hurt the pocketbook. With the
only fine dining drive through window in town, Dish is the perfect place to
pick up a Cappuccino and breakfast, or a sandwich for lunch. Located in the
new Mountain West Bank complex at Division and Highway 2, the Peitz's
combined experience as restaurateurs in San Francisco, as well as owning the

Fiesta Bonita(Mexican)
Jose does a superior job at bringing hot Mexican cuisine to the cold North.
While I once believed the cuisine was more inspired by the Yucatan, one of
our reader's let me know that it has other facets. He says: "the
food is more Jalisco-style, which is apparently where several of them are
from."
So, let's call it a Mexican hodgepodge (That's mezcolanza in
Spanish). Fiesta Bonita is a step above Joel’s in presentation and ambiance,
and more authentic than Jalapeno’s. Yummy, yummy, yummy.

41 SOUTH
(Steak & Seafood) A new operation in
Sandpoint's best old location with Claudia Dick, owner of Trinity, at the
helm, and Chef Jeremy cooking some of the best fare in Sandpoint, this is
one of my two favorite restaurants in town. The menu is innovative and at
the same time comfortable, the wine list is well-thought out and has at
least two of my favs. What makes 41 South best though is the fabulous
location, overlooking Lake Pend Oreille and the Long Bridge. Great Sunday
brunch, nice outside seating to take in the views, and slips for up to
twenty boats. We hear that earlier seatings are in the works for summer

Hope Market Cafe(American) Closed and reopening as a fine
dining restaurant at Sand Creek Grill
I have enjoyed so many sandwiches and lunches there I can hardly count them
now. Besides a great view, the food is a very decent and consistently good
offering. Plus, unlike a lot of other establishments here, prices are
bearable. That is good, because Hope is not a happenin' place come
wintertime. The Hope Market Cafe is supported by a loyal following of
locals, and the store offers some things that make this place truly special.
For instance, recently I bought a flight of the Dunn Howell Mountain Cab.
This flight consists of the three cabs produced from 1999 to 2001. If you
are familiar with wine, you will know that for just $300, this was a true
bargain. The cheese selection is almost as fantastic as the great wine
choices. They have truffle oils, gourmet foods, a good beer selection, all
paired with good food and a killer view. Good job Hope Market Cafe. Acoustic

creative, and the fare can range from complex, to simple, utilizing the
freshest ingredients.Beer, wine and cocktails are available in our bar. Oh,

OISHII(Sushi)
Junior does a pretty good job with his sushi and this new location is a
prime spot on First Avenue. This is coming from the guy
who owned Sandpoint's first sushi restaurant. Used to be located within Cafe Trinity. I make sushi several times a
month, and that is my favorite venue for putting good eats down my mouth.
While it is not the most traditional sushi, it is easily as good as any I
have had in larger communities. Thanks Junior. Plus, they have added some
eclectic dishes and French cuisine to the menu, and now have a full liquor
license with perhaps the best bar selection in town, plus an equally
interesting wine list. Even better, the new Spar Bar upstairs is one of the
few late night happening spots in town, with its own menu and lots of

SLATES SPORTS BAR(Amercan)
The new digs are very cool, and is set up like a mountain lodge. Given that
they probably cater to the skiers from Schweitzer Mountain during ski
season, that's a good thing. Good sports bar with multiple screens, full
liquor bar, regular live music, and comedians. Dependable good food
and now that the atmosphere is greatly improved, will probably be one of the
success stories of 2009. Behind the restaurant the new Holiday Inn Express
is going up fast and should be done by spring.. 477272 Highway 95 N (Right

Spud's Rotisserie & Grill(Amercan) Rated #11for all Sandpoint Restaurants by Yahoo
Travel. Visit Spuds for a great meal and a super view of the marina from
their back deck. Spuds features gourmet homemade soups, sandwiches, steaks,
salads and famous Idaho potatoes with a variety of toppings. If you are
really hungry get the half roasted chicken with Caesar Salad. Other dishes
include ahi tuna with an Oriental pesto, fresh halibut with mango ginger
salsa and ribeye steak with whole-grain mustard butter. Most dishes and
sandwiches are good values for the money, and a decent wine selection is
available. On the water, next to Starbucks.

TANGO CAFE(American

Classic cafe food and coffee in the new Panhandle State Bank building. Great

restaurant is what we have come to expect from Sandpoint's first family of
food: good food, good prices.

THREE GLASSES(Incredible Italian food and wine list) *Now
only opens (not as a restaurant) for special events and concerts. My number 1 rated restaurant. A superlative wine bar in the cellar
area behind First Street, this restaurant is the lovingly portrayed efforts
of John and Darcy Peters, my neighbors from the Hope Peninsula. They brought
in a chef from Alba Italy, Luigi, and the ambiance, decor, and wine
selection matches the food perfectly. In a word: wonderful. The piano
streams live music, and while very well appointed, the atmosphere is relaxed
and inviting. In the works is an addition to the restaurant upstairs, as
well as a gourmet deli. Did we need this restaurant? Absolutely. With so
many new and very good offerings for eateries in Sandpoint, this is the
best. Admittedly my first meal there was shared with my good friend, Johnny
Knight, from KPND, and our meal tallied almost $300 for just the two of us.
But John keeps vintage selections of superlative wines, and we enjoyed a
ripe, decade old Amarone. I had rabbit, John had rack of lamb. A perfect
meal and they had been open just a week! They have gotten even better since
then. A truly welcome addition.

219 LOUNGE(Bar Food)
North Idaho‘s oldest watering hole and is considered by many as a landmark
in Sandpoint. To this day, the 219 is one of downtown's most happening
nightlife spots. Got to admit, I probably go to 219 when I want a good,
strong, and simple cocktail more than any other place other than the Beach
House. Free tacos on certain days, and while simple, not bad either.
