North Idaho Area Horse &
Rodeo Events
Sandpoint has a great love for horses. Horse culture in Sandpoint and North
Idaho is as old as the lumber industry. While farming had a great need for
horses, hauling timber from down the mountains, for both export to the rest of
the nation, and the railroad expansion in particular, made them essential to
our area.
Today, breeding is an important part of our
economy, and there are hundreds of horse ranches. In particular, Icelandic
ponies are a specialty where area breeders excel.
Today,
Around the region you can find numerous private ranches, as well as several
resources for various equestrian adventures. You can either rent a horse, or If
you have your own you can find many trails. There are trails in the Trestle
Creek, Gold Creek, Trout Creek and Rapid Lightening Creek drainages.
The U.S.
Forest Service has maps which provide detailed trail information, plus
Schweitzer has several trails as well as Mountain Home Adventures if you don’t
have your horse here.
There
are also unique horses for sale in the area. Every year the
International Draft Horse Show has a sale at the Bonner County Fairgrounds with numerous breeds
being showcased. Other popular breeds in the area include the Appaloosa, Paint
and the Quarter Horse.
So, if you
love horses and horseback riding in Sandpoint and North Idaho...
